Lack of attention affects your child's future

Child and Adolescent Mental Health Specialist Dr. Leyla Ezgi Tüğen said, "If families notice symptoms that include attention deficit in their children, they should apply to the Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist immediately."

Specialist Dr Leyla Ezgi Tüğen, from the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Department of the Pendik Medipol University Hospital, made a statement about the attention deficit in children. Stating that attention deficit causes a decrease in academic success and deterioration of social relations, Dr. Tüğen said, “If families notice symptoms that include attention deficit in their children, they should apply to the Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist immediately. '' Dr. Tüğen emphasized that teachers as well as families play a role in this issue.

"If your child is overly careful about the things he / she loves, your child may have a lack of attention."

Stating that the child may have a lack of attention, if the child is extremely careful about the things he / she loves, Dr Leyla Ezgi Tüğen said, “The most common symptoms observed in children with lack of attention are; not being able to focus on the lesson and making too much attention mistakes at school and at home, getting bored too quickly during the task, dislike doing homework, losing things frequently, forgetting what to do during the day, pretending not to listen when talking to him / her. Another important point is the child's timing skill. In other words, it is the child's ability to fulfill the given task within a certain period of time. On the other hand, children, who have difficulties with timing skills, often have difficulty completing homework or projects, a slow preparation process when going to school in the morning, and a general slowness. In children with lack of attention, excessive attention (hyperfocus) towards their favorite areas may be observed. For example; Playing games on the screen for hours, etc. Most children with lack of attention also have symptoms that we call hyperactivity and impulsivity. Hyperactivity is a state of excessive mobility that is not suitable for the age and development level of the person. Hyperactive children show symptoms such as being energetic, constantly playing with their hands and feet, jumping up and down-rambling around the room, walking around the classroom, talking a lot. Impulsivity is generally defined as the inability of an individual to control his / her behavior. Behaviors such as haste, impatience, not being able to wait, interrupt, and speak without thinking are signs of impulsivity. ''

What should parents do?
Making a statement about what the families will do, Dr Tüğen said '' If families notice these symptoms in their children themselves or if they are mentioned by their teachers, firstly they should consult a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist. The Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist obtains information from the family and talks to the child. The teacher uses family reporting forms and some cognitive-psychological tests in order to aid diagnosis, to have information about many people and environments, to determine the severity of symptoms and to use them in treatment follow-up. Delay in diagnosis and treatment can cause the deterioration of the child's family and social relations, decrease in academic success, decrease in self-esteem and adding many additional mental states over time. In the treatment, medication treatments, behavioral interventions carried out with the child, family and school are applied according to the severity of the situation and the needs of the child.
